WRITING
SCORING
Well guys, now let know about how to score the
product of writing. As long as we know that writing is different from other
skills. There are some steps when we want to write a text like what I have
published in my posting before. It means that if we want to score the product
of writing, we have to know kinds of writing scoring. So lets’ check!
As cited in Weigle (2002: 108) “A score in a
writing assessment is the outcome
of an interaction that involves not merely the test taker and the test,
but the test taker, the
prompt, or task, the written text itself, the rater(s) and the rating
scale.” (Lyons, 1990;
Kenyon, 1992; McNamara, 1996) Moreover, McNamara (1996) added that
“the
development of a scale (or set of scales) and the descriptors for each
scale level are of
critical
importance for the validity of the assessment.” (as cited in Weigle, 2002, p.
109).
Considering to the
rating scale which has an important role in the process of
scoring in students’ writing, there are three types of rating scales
which are defined by
McNamara (1996). They are primary trait scales, holistic scales, and
analytic scales that
each
of them has different criterion.
According to Weigle (2002: 110) in the primary
trait scale “the rating scale is defined with respect to the specific writing
assignment and essays are judged according to the degree of success with which
the writer has carried out the assignment.” While holistic scales according to
Weigle (2002) the score isassigned based on the overall “impression” of the
text. Meanwhile, the assigning of score in analytical scoring based on several
aspects. “The scripts are rated on several aspects of writing or criteria
rather than given a single score.” (Weigle, 2002, p. 114).
